Le Grande Voyage

My trip took me through 8 countries (actually 9 but I didn't stop in Austria) in 30 days:

England
   Bath
   London
   Dover

France
   Calais
   Paris
   Monaco

Belgium
   Brussels

Holland
   Amsterdam

Germany
   Koln
   The Rhine Valley
   Munich

Greece
   Corfu

Italy
   Naples
   Vesuvius
   Herculaneum
   The Amalfi Coast
   Pompei
   Rome
   Cinque Terre

Spain
   Barcelona

Here are some of my favorite pics. I'd actually like to hear which ones people think are most interesting, picturesque or whatever so let me know.

Haven't had enough. Check out the movies I shot. They're all a minute or less.

I started in London, rented a car and drove out to the countryside near Bath to see Avebury, Stonehenge, Glastonbury and Bath itself before returning to London for a few days. I left London by train and headed to Dover where I caught the ferry to Calais (northwest coast of France). Kind of got stuck in Calais for the night because I got in after the last train had left. Luckily, I met these 2 super cool girls from Uruguay who made Calais fun (as well as Paris). Made it to Paris the next day. Spent 3 days in Paris, went up to Brussels for a night, then stopped in Amsterdam for a couple nights. After a dizzying 2 nights of partying, I went through Koln on my way to spending the night along the Rhine in a little German town called Bacharach. Went to Munich the next day for a couple nights there, then traveled by day and overnight train to Brindisi (southeast coast of Italy) to catch the ferry to Corfu, a Greek island. A relaxing couple of days there before more trains to southern Italy. Spent a night in Naples, an unplanned night in Salerno (nothing better than a stone bench for a bunk), and a night in Amalfi before heading to the magnificence of Rome for 3 days. Then, up to Cinque Terre (the Italian Riviera) where I stayed in Vernazza for a few days. Met some great people there, and we went to Monaco for a couple days, before I ended up in Barcelona for my last 4 days or so.

Here are the things with which I began my trip. Everything fit neatly in my backpack (a Kelty day pack that worked out rather well), but I also took along a Timbuk2 shoulder bag (check out timbuk2.com - these are pretty cool, work well when you already have a backpack strapped on and you can design your own) for carrying around a windbreaker/rain jacket, camera, journal, maps, phrase book and many other miscellaneous items at various times.

I picked up very little along the way. Usually, I tried to carry a bit of food and drink around but tried not to pick up items that would take up permanent residence in my pack. I bought a CD in London, a book about Pompei, Herculaneum and Vesuvius in southern Italy, a hat in Rome, and some miscellaneous items in Barcelona (it was the end of the trip after all). I also picked up a bunch of brochures and what not from the museums and places I visited.

Here is a fairly comprehensive list of the items I took (see a pic of my stuff):
